Andor Season 2 Has Officially Completed Filming, Star Confirms In Touching Tribute To Cast & Crew (2024)

Summary

  • Filming for season 2 of Andor, the Star Wars show starring Diego Luna, has wrapped, as confirmed by Luna himself on Instagram.
  • Despite the completion of filming, the second season is not expected to be released on Disney+ until 2025, due to production delays and other franchise shows planned for earlier release.
  • Unlike other Star Wars shows, Andor uses practical sets and location shoots instead of Lucasfilm's Volume technology, resulting in a longer post-production process for special effects.

Andor star Diego Luna has confirmed filming on season 2 of the hit Star Wars show has wrapped. Developed as a prequel to 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the show follows Luna’s titular thief-turned-spy as he becomes embroiled in the fight against the Galactic Empire. Originally planned for a five-season run, showrunner Tony Gilroy would later come to realize the impractical nature of that approach and revised his plans to have season 2 lead directly into the events of Rogue One.

Taking to Instagram, Luna confirmed Andor season 2’s last day of filming by thanking more than 700 people responsible for working on the production. Check out his post below:

Suggesting that he could not be more thankful for the “amazing experience” of working on the show, he revealed that the sheer size of the production’s cast and crew made it impossible to thank each person individually.

Andor Season 2 Still Isn't Likely Until 2025

While this latest production update potentially bodes well for viewers anxious to see Andor’s return after season 2’s many production delays, the show is still not likely to arrive on Disney+ until sometime in 2025. Even though Luthen Rael actor Stellan Skarsgård recently intimated that it could possibly return sooner, after “half a year at least”, Disney already has four other Star Wars shows planned for a 2024 release and Andor is not officially included on their release slate for this year.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 is the first show to release in 2024 on February 21. Other shows confirmed to follow are Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte, and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi season 2.

Moreover, unlike The Mandalorian and other shows set in the Star Wars universe, Andor is unique in its decision to avoid using Lucasfilm’s ground-breaking Volume technology in favor of practical sets and location shoots. While this approach provides the show with a far more grounded look reminiscent of the earliest Star Wars movies, it inevitably comes with a much greater turnaround time when applying special effects into the final edit.

At this stage, it is not clear when Disney will look to officially release Andor season 2, though with filming now complete, it may point to a potential arrival in early 2025. Yet for audiences who have waited patiently since season 1 concluded in November 2022, the season 2 release can probably not happen soon enough. With any luck, Disney and Lucasfilm may soon decide to provide expectant audiences with a firm release schedule.
