Description

South Vietnam received over 150 F-5 fighters, some of which were F-5Es. After the fall of Saigon, many of these F-5s were evacuated to Thailand, however some still fell into Soviet and Vietnamese hands. These evacuated F-5s began a new life in Thailand, who operated about 70 of them in their own air force. All of these F-5s except the F-5Es were retired not long after. The F-5Es however were upgraded multiple times throughout their life and continue to see service with the Royal Thai Air Force to this day, and are not expected to retire until at least 2025-2030.

Introduced in Update "Alpha Strike", the ▄F-5E FCU is a squadron aircraft in the Japanese tech tree. It plays with all the major advantages of the other F-5Es in-game, being incredibly light and highly manoeuvrable resulting in some of the best energy retention on any jet aircraft at its battle rating range. The Thai F-5E however also solves one of the few downsides of the other F-5Es, the sub-par missiles. The F-5E FCU gets access to four all-aspect missiles instead of the usual two rear-aspect only missiles found on other F-5s in-game. In addition to this, it receives the usual great complement of ground ordnance that F-5s get, providing an incredible CAS option for Japan players in mixed battles. All in all, the F-5E FCU is a great all-rounder for almost every role it can find itself in for its battle rating, and is generally a forgiving vehicle to play and easy to learn even for less experienced pilots.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • A small target with good manoeuvrability makes it a difficult target to hit
  • Uses Python 3 IR missiles
  • Can attack ground targets from a distance with the AGM-65B
  • All IR missiles can be slaved by the radar
  • Modern HUD with sight customization, good for simulator battles

Cons:

  • AGM-65B does not have a thermal camera, which makes it weather dependent
  • Despite having 4 hardpoints, it cannot carry 4 Pythons 3
  • Radar only has standard pulse mode
  • No radar missiles

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Devblog

The Royal Thai Air Force received the first F-5 series aircraft in the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, where the resulting aircraft were equipped purely as attack aircraft. The country began receiving more advanced F-5Es in the late 70s. In 1988, the modernization of part of the F-5E fleet began. They received a HUD, a new sight with a ballistic computer, countermeasures, an RWR and the ability to install Python 3 missiles. Even though the Royal Thai Air Force have begun using F-16 fighters, the F-5 series of aircraft remain in service to this day.

FAQs

Is the F5E FCU good? ›

All in all, the F-5E FCU is a great all-rounder for almost every role it can find itself in for its battle rating, and is generally a forgiving vehicle to play and easy to learn even for less experienced pilots.

Is the f5 good in War Thunder? ›

The F-5E is a huge threat in battle, and can survive against lots of enemies at once, but without teammates the F-5E becomes an easy target.

What is the velocity of the gun in f5e? ›

The gun is: Low velocity (800 m/s when others are usually over 1000m/s) Tracerless (You can't see the trajectory or correct for lead) Low capacity (120 rounds)

What is the most powerful jet engine in War Thunder? ›

The only downside of this aircraft is its roll rate, which can impair its reactivity at close ranges. The R-79V-300 is currently the most powerful aircraft engine in War Thunder by a large margin.

How many missiles could the f5e carry? ›

F-5E Tiger II armaments

Four AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and two AGM-65 Mavericks air-to-surface missiles as well as rockets are mounted on the seven hard points. The aircraft is also armed with unguided iron bombs, CBU-24/49/52/58 cluster bomb munitions, napalm bomb canisters and M129 leaflet bombs.

What is the most powerful gun in War Thunder? ›

The Type 5 is currently the most powerful gun mounted on an IJA tank in War Thunder. It draws parallels to the famed German 88 mm KwK43, sporting similar muzzle velocity and penetration, but with significantly increased explosive filler and improved angled armour penetration.

Is there an F 15 in War Thunder? ›

The F-15A is no slouch, however, as it can hold its own in a BVR fight. Be sure to pay attention to your RWR and defend accordingly. In simulator battles, the F-15 is very formidable due to its smokeless AIM-9M air-to-air missiles, but is limited by the seeker range and speed of the AIM-7M.

Is 6 War Thunder weak spot? ›

The only weak spot being the lower sides of the hull and turret sides and rear, the only way to reliably penetrate it is to get a shot from the side. An attentive player that never shows the sides is an invincible opponent.

Is the FN 5.7 illegal? ›

Yes, a civilian can own a FN Five Seven I used to carry them in my inventory when I owned TCM Armory. If you are interested in one the are fun shooters, but be prepared for the high price of ammo as the 5.7x28 cartridge runs about 0.78$ / round and goes up from there. So it's not a cheap gun to do much shooting with.

Does the f5e have radar? ›

F-5E and F-5F Tiger II

Its wings were fitted with enlarged leading edge extensions, giving an increased wing area and improved maneuverability. The aircraft's avionics were more sophisticated, crucially including a radar (initially the Emerson Electric AN/APQ-153) (the F-5A and B had no radar).

Is FN 57 CA legal? ›

Assuming you're talking about the US, yes, the 5.7mm rounds are 100% legal in the United States in every State. I bought them in California for my FN Five-Seven pistol. Which I also purchased in California.

Is F-5A good plane? ›

The F-5E proved to be a successful combat aircraft in service with US allies, but had no combat service with the US Air Force, though the F-5A with modifications, designated F-5C, was flown by the US in Vietnam.

How much does a f5e cost? ›

~$2.1 million

Is the F-5 jet better than the MiG 21? ›

lost every time. 'At high speeds and energy fighting the two aircraft were considered to be equals. But as energy bleeds off and speeds get slower, developing into a maneuvering dogfight, the F-5 pulled the advantage and got into a position to kill the MiG-21.

Does the Navy still use the F-5? ›

Newer, single-seat F-5N Tiger IIs are operated alongside the older F-5F two-seat models for air combat training and testing pilots against adversary tactics. The navy fleet consists of 30 F-5Ns and two F-5Fs, while the USMC operates 11 F-5Ns and a single F-5F, according to NAVAIR.
